Sparkle Motion
Sparkle Motion is the dream-pop alias of Melbourne musician Monica Sonand. In 2009, the classically trained singer shed the stringent world of opera to immerse herself in pop music.
Musically establishing herself as synthesizer Cinderella and backing vocalist in bands such as electro-pop outfit Catcall, transcendental disco band Magic Silver White and dark-synth pop outfit Romy (ex-Macromantics), she set her roots deeply in the Melbourne and Sydney music scene. Monica also contributed her vocal stylings to album recordings for the likes of Architecture In Helsinki, Catcall, Matt Bailey and Laura Jean. She has shared the stage as backing vocalist to Swedish pop singer Freida Hyvonen on her Australian tour, and in April 2011 toured the United States with JD Sampson's band MEN in Romy.
Now moving away from her role in a backing band and into a new role as solo artist, Sparkle Motion has released Shocking Blue, her debut ep. Drawing comparisons to the Cocteau Twins, Fever Ray and Golden Palomino, Sparkle Motion is a small sample of songs recorded with different engineers over the last three years.
The ep's opener, The Hold Up, a song about longing and desire, was recorded by indie-rock engineer Jack Farley (Beaches, The Twerps, St. Helens,Circle). It was written and recorded spontaneously through an old Hammond organ Leslie speaker amp, creating the ghostly ambience that pervades the track.
Turpentine and My Friend were engineered by Jojo Petrina (Magic Silver White), who helped make Sparkle Motion's reverbed-drenched dreams become euphonic reality.
Gambol and Cavort (DJ Rob Diggity) has provided a bangin' techno/disco remix to Turpentine, while Magic Silver White has transformed the sonorous sounds of My Friend into a transcendental pop gem.
Shocking Blue is Sparkle Motion's debut release.
