Several questions for... Horse Stories
Posted: 11 February, 2010
Horse Stories, aka Australian-by-way-of-L.A songwriter Toby Burke, is flying high after the release of November, November, his long-awaited fourth lp. The record has been garnering a bunch of favourable reviews, including comparisons to legends like Dylan and Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon).
To support the lp, Toby has been playing a number of shows around the U.S, and has just released a great new video for Telephone Message (November).
We caught up with Toby and asked him about what he's listening to, what people should listen to more, and where he would love to play if he had limitless reserves of cash.
My favourite song right now:
Almost Let You In by Molina and Johnson.
My current musical obsession:
Springsteen.
A great, under recognized record:
Winners Never Quit by Pedro The Lion or most of the ones by Damien Jurado.
At the moment, I'm reading:
Ghosts by Cesar Aira––an Argentinean writer I've never read before, but found by way of Roberto Bolano, who I really like.
Three movies everyone should see before they die:
Dumb n Dumber
City of Lost Children
The Proposition
My dream collaboration would be:
Daniel Lanois or Willie Nelson. Or both.
My alternate, non-musical vocation would be:
Shopkeeper.
If cash/logistics were no object, I would do a tour of:
Japan or the whole of Australia (I mean all of it).
The last thing I bought:
A couple of copies of Found magazine. People submit photographs, notes, emails and such that they just found somewhere. They're incredible little insights into strangers' private lives. Beats the hell out of 'people-watching'.
Most treasured bit of gear:
If we're including guitars, my old J-45 Gibson. If it's 'gear' gear, my Roland Space Echo.
Ideally, I will retire:
Never. Ideally I'll always be doing, and able to do, something I love too much to stop. Ideally.
