Drunk Mums

The Drunk Mums' new single 'Nanganator' is out now.

The force that is Drunk Mums started out in Australia's sleepy northern tropics, when four friends –– Dean Whitby, Jake Doyle, Adam Ritchie & Jonathon Sporle –– began organising gigs at their friends' places in Cairns because there was nowhere else to play.

Drunk Mums' amazing racket –– think surf music, but dirt instead of sand, or a kind of loose, slightly crazed garage rock –– soon saw them make their way to the US, where their adventures included being robbed of everything (van, passports) in Miami.

After the US, the foursome settled in a run down two storey mansion in Melbourne's west, quickly developing a name for themselves around town with their meaty, raucous, succinct songs and formidable live show.

With three different writers in the band, Drunk Mums songs are never short on ideas or sounds. Inspired by The Mummies, The Angels and The Hives, the band's sound could perhaps best be described as what the Brian Johnestown Massacre might sound like if they saw sunshine more than once a year.

In 2011, Drunk Mums released their debut ep, Eventual Ghost, a great distillation of everything that makes the raucous Queenslanders such an exciting thing. Check out the clip for the title track below:

2012 was a big year for the band: after winning the Very West contest, for bands from Melbourne's western suburbs, Drunk Mums won a slot on the Melbourne's Laneway Festival, where they duly put on a ripping set. This, with their well received EP, led to increasing interest in their adopted home town, and shows with the likes of Bass Drum of Death (USA), Bleeding Knees Club and Mickey Avalon (USA).

Live, the band is something to behold: combustible, hypnotising and heartily encouraging lewd behaviour, it must be seen to be believed.

In late 2012, the quintet released  their supremely awesome self-titled debut album, a concise, riotous and heady brew that amply delivers on the band's early promise.

Drunk Mums is out now on Gaga Digi, as is the first single from the album, 'Rubbing Your Gums'.

The band returned in 2014 with two new singles: 'Plastic', a barnstorming number which shows the band's clear love for classic Oz rock, and 'Nanganator', a brazen and infectious two minute burst of punk pop that makes us very excited for their second album. 'Plastic' and 'Nanganator' are out now on Gaga Digi.
